Katavi National Park

Tanzania’s Untouched Wilderness

Hidden deep in western Tanzania, Katavi National Park is one of Africa’s last truly wild safari destinations — remote, raw, and breathtakingly untouched.

Discover Katavi National Park

Far from crowded safari routes lies Katavi National Park, a hidden wilderness where nature still reigns supreme. Covering more than 4,400 square kilometers of pristine floodplains, woodlands, and seasonal rivers, Katavi offers an authentic safari experience unlike anywhere else in East Africa. Here, massive buffalo herds roam endlessly across golden plains while lions stalk through tall grasses in dramatic predator-prey encounters. Hippos crowd shrinking river pools during the dry season, crocodiles bask on muddy riverbanks, and elephants wander freely through untouched landscapes. What makes Katavi truly extraordinary is its isolation. Unlike the busy northern parks, Katavi receives only a small number of visitors each year, allowing travelers to experience Africa in complete silence and exclusivity. Game drives often happen without seeing another vehicle for hours. For seasoned safari travelers seeking genuine wilderness, raw wildlife encounters, and luxury far from the crowds, Katavi delivers one of the most unforgettable safari experiences on the continent.

The best time to visit Katavi National Park is during the dry season from June to October. During these months, wildlife gathers around shrinking water sources, creating extraordinary game-viewing opportunities and dramatic animal interactions. The green season from November to April transforms the park into a lush paradise filled with migratory birds, vibrant landscapes, and stunning photography conditions. While animals become more dispersed, the scenery becomes incredibly beautiful and peaceful.

How to Get There

Katavi’s remoteness is part of its magic. The park is located over 1,000 kilometers from Dar es Salaam and is best reached by scheduled or charter safari flights from Arusha or Dar es Salaam to Ikuu Airstrip. Fly-in safaris offer the most comfortable and efficient way to reach the park while enjoying breathtaking aerial views of Tanzania’s landscapes. Many travelers combine Katavi with Mahale Mountains or Ruaha National Park for a complete western Tanzania safari circuit.
